I think this is great news for Arlington Village...a little extra green space would be great compared to all the concrete and buildings that are on the Pike at the moment. Read below for an excerpt from the story:
Master Plan includes large, flexible plaza, interactive water fountain, public art
The Arlington County Board late Monday night (July 21) approved the master plan for Penrose Square, the first and largest of three new squares planned for Columbia Pike’s Town Center that are key to the County’s efforts to transform the Pike.
“Penrose Square will provide a beautiful, well-planned public gathering place on Columbia Pike,” said Board Chairman J. Walter Tejada. “This is an important step forward in the County’s efforts to revitalize the Pike by turning it into a lively, pedestrian-friendly, mixed-use corridor with plenty of outdoor spaces where people can come together.”
The 33,000 sq. ft. square will be located on the north side of Columbia Pike between South Cleveland and South Barton Streets in what are now the existing surface parking lots of the Adams Square and Fillmore Shopping Centers. The square will face south, fronting on Columbia Pike.

as an attorney, I want to remind the moderator of the following:
Slander is an untruthful oral (spoken) statement about a person that harms the person's reputation or standing in the community. Because slander is a tort (a civil wrong), the injured person can bring a lawsuit against the person who made the false statement. If the statement is made via broadcast media -- for example, over the radio or on TV -- it is considered libel, rather than slander, because the statement has the potential to reach a very wide audience.
I think you have crossed the line.
??? What are you talking about?? This posting is a comment about the new public square and informative.
A forum for residents is just that - a forum. Not slander. Anyone can comment on any of the postings. You might want to get into the 21st century. And why is your comment anonymous if you're so concerned. Plagurism is a crime. Just googled your comment.
I tried posting something else where on this blog and the following popped up, "Your comment has been saved and will be visible after blog owner approval".
I guess this blog is only open to the comments of the owner & her friends and not to the rest of the residents. We are being monitored..... you have been had...
and I think the attorney is correct
Maybe you should consider a blogging tutorial. Most blogs, after a posting has been up for a couple of weeks require approval of the blogger to keep topics relevant.
You have no idea who this blogger is - and no has been "had". I am guessing your not an attorney (but posted the comments like one).
You're just upset (probably as a board member) because there's now an open forum for residents to discuss issues.
This is also a good forum to help get the word out about our community. You'd think that you'd be happy to have such a site and people going to it.
Dear anonymous, Esquire:
Did you stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night?
What am I missing? I don't even know who the blogger is, and you're reading my comment. If he (or she?) is blocking comments, I would suggest to him (her?) to be more aggressive.
Did yesterday's monkey admonition make today's comment section appear as inbecillic musings? If not the monkey, what?
Somebody help me!
Just for everyone's reference: Please see Amendment 1 of the Bill of Rights to the U.S. Constitution.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Well, well, well...it seems that the blog has had some high traffic today! Sorry monkey...I know that I asked you to not put silly postings up...and to abide by topic. I will also tell the anonymous poster that kept cutting and pasting the same comments on multiple postings the same thing. Please post relevant comments under the correct postings...it makes it easier for everyone to follow the conversation.
Also, I am confused by the lawyer comment...I'm not sure how promoting a public square on Columbia Pike is wrong. Maybe they don't like public parks?
Not to get off topic... but as to the original post, will the following necessitate an increase in condo fees by the AV Board next year?
ARLINGTON, Va. – The Arlington County Board today adopted a budget for fiscal year 2009 ... the total County budget is $1.18 billion, an increase of 9.9% over FY 2008 revised.
Two cents of the three-cent property tax increase will fund changes to the County’s retirement and health benefits programs. One cent will be dedicated, through the special Sanitary District Tax adopted by the Board today, to rebuild and maintain the County’s stormwater infrastructure.
This brings Arlington County's residential property tax rate to 84.8 cents per 100 dollars of assessed value. The average homeowner will see an increase of $104 -- or 2.4% -- in his or her real estate tax bill. Over 30 percent of homeowners will see a decrease, due to the decline in residential property assessments.
Exercising new authority granted by the State legislature that allows local governments to address some of the most pressing transportation needs, the Board adopted a 12.5 cent increase in the real estate tax rate for commercial and industrial properties to raise revenues for transportation improvements. The increase will raise $20.8 million in FY 2009 and fund transportation improvements at Metro stations, in Crystal City/Potomac Yards, along Columbia Pike, and elsewhere.
In FY 2009, the County’s living wage will be increased from $11.80 per hour to $12.75 per hour.

The drawings are on the CPRO website. The link is at the bottom of the original post or you can go to http://www.columbiapikepartnership.com/ .
If the blogger is moderating and approving comments before posting, will he/she please block the silly monkey postings?
Monkey poster: you have a lot of time to waste. Do you even live in Arlington Village?
