Did you steal my shovel?

Keep your shovels close over the weekend. Both my shovel and my neighbors were stolen yesterday. Perhaps they were just borrowed and they will magically reappear...but who knows. Whereever you are shovel you will be greatly missed this weekend. I'm sure you are getting lots of action where you are! On that note...how long do you think it will take Arlington County to plow our streets this time around?

A plow came down Barton about 8 the evening. That will help.

Sorry about your shovel. I try to keep mine inside. Hopefully yours will be returned. A large amount of snow slid off the sloped roof and buried heat pumps and deck. Have to keep the heat pump units clear of snow so air can circulate.

Will be a long night.

I'm so sorry to hear that your shovel and your neighbors were stolen. I hope they all find a nice home.

I didn't steal your shovel but think the AV staff is doing a good job shoveling the snow.

I was clearing snow About 11 last night. The AV crew was making a pass on all of the walkways and stoops. It was blowing hard. THe guys are really working hard this winter. Do they stay in the village during this time? They keep making rounds. I cannot image that they are running back and forth from their homes.

Roads are looking good. The county seems to be doing a good job.

we all need to get out and help dig out the village.

The AV guys are fantastic! They are outside my unit now scraping down to the sidewalk I think. Hat's off to them! I hope I can find them tomorrow--they're getting brownies from me!

Could we all e-mail the office to let them know how much we appreciate it? Wouldn't some public praise be welcome??

Since we don't have reserved parking, parking is going to be a bear for the next week. Do folks think its right park in a a spot that someone else spent hours shoveling out?

Has anyone heard if power has been lost for any areas of AV? Trying to make it home today, but not worth it if power is not there.

thank you!

Community meeting postponed until February 11, 2010
The ART (Arlington Transit) community meeting originally scheduled for February 3, 2010 has been postponed until Thursday, February 11. The meeting is to discuss proposed changes to the ART 74 and introducing a new route, the ART 84, to serve Nauck. The time and location remain the same: 7-9 PM at the Arlington Career Center, 816 South Walter Reed Drive.

Steal?

As an A.V. "progressive," I'm guessing it is part of a "shovel-ready-redistribution" program.

Sunday Snow Update:

-As far as I know AV has power...thank goodness...I wouldn't be here if I couldn't watch the superbowl.

-I don't think you should take a spot that has been shoveled...anyone that is driving around in this stuff has to have a reason and probably need their spot more than you. Borrow a shovel and get your own spot.

-Have seen no AV staff today. Are they going to address roof issues on Monday? Beware of icicles and snow build up on your roofs.

Sorry for stolen shovels. My shovel has my name and unit number. It seems working.

We should respect our neighbor's hard work for clearing parking spots. I see someone puts a chair or corn in their parking spots. Although we don't have assigned parking, I think it is OK to reserve it until snow melts. Any thought?

No one is entitled to a parking space just because they shoveled out their car.

That's nonsense!

You shoveled out your car because you had to, not because you can NOW claim that space as your own.

The Village DOSEN'T have reserved parking and this isn't the time to start claiming parking spots because you think you did something to deserve it.

That's selfish. That's the typical "me, me, me" generation, mentality.

These are the same people who think the courtyards belongs to them or they're above the leash laws for their dogs. Or, they keep their neighbors up all night with loud parties.

"Me, me, me."

"Adverse Possesion" is against the law!

"Corn" to reserve a spot?

Cone? Typo?

It's infuriating to spend hours clearing out a spot, only to have someone take advantage.

Bad speller spazzing out at 12:47 must be one of those. Well, don't be upset when you find scratch marks on your car.

Check out Barton Street. There are plenty of people with beach chairs, stools and cones saving their spots and I don't blame them.

What's selfish is for someone to pull into a spot to park a car that they did not shovel. There are plenty of spaces in the village to park your car (granted, not in front of your unit), so if you want a spot, dig it out and don't park in someone's spot that took an hour or two to shovel out.

"Well, don't be upset when you find scratch marks on your car."

I think I now know whose been vandalizing our cars.

Wow, and you could be my neighbor!!!

You should be ashamed of yourself, resorting to property damage to make your selfish point.

Step forward, and identify yourself.

You creepy "spazz!!!"

"Wow, and you could be my neighbor!!!"

I really doubt it. My immediate neighbors are sane and articulate.

I think it's perfectly acceptable for people to reserve with a chair during snow storms if they shoveled that spot. If everybody was courteous and sticked to the spot they shoveled that would not be needed, but we know from the last snow storm that this is not the case and you have the occasional lazy bones who will take advantage of someone else's spot.

I can't believe shovels are disappearing. I let my neighbors use mine as long as it gets returned. Had to bring it in tonight given the AV warning that electrical equipment has given up.

from washingtonpost.com:

"Boston has codified its citizens' right to benefit from their backbreaking snow-clearing labor; a city law says that if you dig out your car in a snow emergency, a lawn chair or trash can renders the spot yours for at least two days while you're away at work. In Chicago, blocking a parking spot is illegal, but city officials acknowledge an informal rule of dibs if you've done the digging."

So there.

Instead of being mad at each other for parking in spot that was "liberated" by another, shouldn't the blame fall on AV and the AV Board for not learning from the December storm. It is great to have our roads plowed, but we need further help removing the 3 foot wall the plows make in front of our cars. It is poor leadership that this problem was not addressed before this most recent storm- we "allegedly" have funds in reserve. I do NOT want to live in a place where you have to guard your parking spot with lawn chairs (or wine bottles as one resident used). Nor do I think anyone else in this community does either.

Anonymous said...

Myles, sweetie-

Overlooking the poor writing skills used to convey your thoughts for a moment, do you really think that "the 3 foot wall the plows make in front of our cars" is a result of poor leadership on the part of the board?

Maybe the blame should be placed on the Secretary of State. Or, maybe you should get out your crayons and write a letter to President Obama.

He's in charge, isn't he? He's in charge of over three hundred million Americans - surely HE could order one or two of them to come shovel that wall.

Even if you do end up paying $20 or $30 to have someone shovel around your car, you should still write to the President. You could include a pictogram so he understands what you've gone through. Be sure to use as many of the 64 crayolas as you can - not just the white one. And I'd make it a race car in the drawing ( but don't make him think you live in Indianapolis). And draw "yourself" a funny hat!

I deleted my post because it was rude, offensive and completely out of character.

Thank you for understanding.

Let us also note: Many residents shoveled their cars out, only to place the snow in empty spots. This has created large piles of snow that are impossible to shovel out. Let us try to shovel out, and place snow away from spots, to maximize our parking capacity...

I was out of town till today and after reading this blog and fearing someone might have ill feelings towards me for not shoveling out my own spot, decided to park at the community center. I don't mind the walk. At some point, we will need to address the parking issue.

Anonymous said...

To the person parking at the community center or anyone who knows - will they tow your vehicle if it's parked there right now?

Anonymous said...

I hope they won't tow as there is no place to move them. I do plan on getting it out of there as soon as I can shovel out a spot closer to home.

I had a neighbor park in my “dug out” spot yesterday and I was a little annoyed. They most likely parked there because someone took the spot they cleared. We live up at the top of Barton Street, and it’s f-ing commuters that drive us nuts. Every morning we see them turn off of Columbia Pike, pull in, park and run to catch the bus. It’s bad now, just think what it will be like when the Pike gets redeveloped. The board needs to get off this “no stickered parking” kick and address the issues faced today, and what will become even worse tomorrow.

There are plenty of spots "available" on Barton by the pool for those who have not yet shoveled out a spot and have parked in a spot they themselves did not shovel. The unselfish and non-"me, me, me" thing to do would be to go shovel a spot on Barton to replace the one you took. Perhaps Mr. 12:47 can help them?

The funds in reserve are for capital expenditures. Not to pay for someone to shovel snow, which is an operating expense...

Parking at the top of Barton. I agree commuters park there to catch the bus, but Village resident also drive up there to catch the bus and they are allowed to do that.

Shama Lama Ding Dong said...

Anonymous 9:25 a.m., that's my point. Get an AV sticker on those who live here and tow the rest.

Snowy said...

I agree with Shama. Time for stickers.

sorry about your shovels. In our neck of the village we've been all sharing shovels. We don't seem to have as many 'saved' spaces - but after many hours digging out my own car I have no ill will for those who do choose to save their spots.
Someone else noted the excellent job the AV staff has done. Apparently they slept in the office on cots. Amazing. I wonder if we could do a community wide collection for these folks? I hope they are getting plenty of compt days for the hours they worked.
