News from CPRO Website about Giant

Not sure if you ever check out the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO) website but there is news about our Giant Supermarket.

"Carbon Thompson reports that their Penrose Square project (on Columbia Pike at S. Adams St.) is now fully funded. The deal with Wachovia and RBS, which was wrapped up on February 12, means that the existing Giant grocery store and pharmacy will soon be given 45 days notice, and their closure will make way for demolition and excavation of the site. The 7-story development will include a large new Giant store, 30,000 sq. ft. of other retail, 299 apartments, more than 700 parking spaces, and a new public square. The project had been held up pending resolution of a financing package. This is a significant accomplishment in today’s difficult lending environment where fewer loans are being made, and terms are generally less attractive. Financing difficulties have delayed groundbreaking for the Arlington Mill Community Center redevelopment (on the Pike at S. Dinwiddie St.), and also explains why it has not yet been possible to close a deal to redevelop the Bob & Edith’s 2 site (on the Pike at S. Buchanan St.)."

Thanks for the update.

Does anyone have an update as to why it seems all the streets in the Village are getting marked by Miss Utility? Are we getting the streets paved? Some big construction project?

Thanks for the update on Giant. I wonder how the Halstead will do, though...all those condos, all that retail space.

Halstead is not condos, it's full of (expensive) rentals. But point taken--not sure how quickly these spaces will fill up.

How long will it be before we cannot get a seat in our local restaurants? We might be forced to eat at Manee Thai. Just kidding, nothing would make me want to destroy my intestines in that way. Hopefully another coffee shop will move in.

Manee Thai isn't that bad. Depends on what you order.

Totally off topic - but can anyone recommend a reliable and efficient contractor to do kitchen cabinet/counter replacement and bathroom tile work. I am looking for someone who is familiar with AV. Thanks in advance!

Greenfield M&R has done a lot of work in the village. Good guys who do quality work at reasonable prices. Call the office for their contact info.

I've heard good and bad about Greenfield. Personally, I don't do business with people that are related to employees of Arlington Village. It's called a conflict of interest and I don't think the condo owner would get much sympathy from the office if Greenfield messed up.

Why would you call the condo office to complain about a vendor you hired? Its called individual responsibility.

Because if you call the office they would recommend them as well. They've also had them do work on behalf of the Village such as with the outside doors which were improperly installed on over 50 units.

Does anyone actually live in the Halstead apts? I just drove by and there were no light on.

I went to look at the Halstead in December and was told at the time that it was at 8% occupancy (once the December/January people moved in).

It looks so dead over there.
