This blog is dedicated to expressing Arlington Village residents' feelings about our community. It is a blog for the people and by the people. Please give updates on your committee meetings, problems with the community, security issues and of course the great reasons to live in "the village".

Maybe everyone stayed home to watch Obama last night?
They should have filled the Board spot that was open.
Here's a basic outline of what happened at the meeting:
Resident's Forum: Unit # 746 bought her condo with steps that aren't in line with AV policies. The Board asked the owner to go to Arlington County, they said she bought it like that so she shouldn't have to change them. Plus her neighbors don't care. They took this into executive session so we have no idea how this turned out.
They approved minutes from last meeting. This was interesting because they added new members to the Covenants Committee. I didn't write the full list but I imagine it should be listed in the next Crier somewhere since it is an appointed position by the Board.
Facilities Report:
People need to make sure they are maintaining their windows. A lot of owners have paint peeling, etc... Imperial has offered a discount and much was hemmed and hawed about whether the Board would let them flier AV. End result is that there will be note in the Crier.
They want to increase amount of recycling bins so that trash is less. They say that we will make money if people recycle. Remember to crush your recyclabes.
Manager's Report:
We need a new pool contract. There were 3 quotes but the Board was hoping maybe we could negotiate a multi-year contract so it would be cheaper. Question was asked why are we just finding out we need to sign this next week or else no pool for us?
This will be a recurring theme with the pending insurance contract as well that needs to be in place by the second week of March. They are checking to see what other rates we can get but it might be too late to really shop around.
New Phone System: Looks like our phone system is biting the dust. Plus we need a new jack. Board decided to look at a few different services and see if we could get a package that would upgrade our computers as well.
Committees gave reports. Security is doing game night on Friday. Grounds Committee asked for money for 2 projects. One was defeated in reference to landscaping a certain corner of S. Barton. The other was approved, which is a program that will allow AV residents to sign up to get a bag of grass seed. Seems that the gas company left a lot of spotty coverage and this might help mitigate those problems. Treasurer said the L&N turnover is still transitioning. 34 people were delinquent with their payments in February. A bunch of people (55) in the past have sold their condos but still owe the association money. This will most likely be wiped clean and taken as a loss instead of tracking them down (around $1000.00).
New Business:
L&N figured out that 27 people haven't been paying the right amounts for their units. The 401K plan for the employees technically doesn't allow AV to make contributions to employees unless employees are paying into the plan. In the past this wasn't a problem but with the new company they need to revamp things. Talked about later in Exec Session.
New Board Member chosen. His name is Takis. It was suggested that this the opening be voted on next month because it wasn't posted in the Crier but the Board majority decided to go ahead anyway and vote on it. There were 3 candidates...me being one of them. It was pretty much a sealed up seat, 2 members of the Board approached Takis and asked him to put his name in and all the Environmental people on the Board voted for him. He is also on the ERC committee. Even though the vote was kind of rigged. I personally think Takis is a great addition to the Board. He really wants to better the Board and make things more transparent. I wish him luck.
The Board went into Executive Session after that. Basically my notes are worth 3 hours of sitting in the meeting room.
If I were a renter and there was no pool come summer, I'd move.
As an owner, it's the only thing that softens the blow of the association fees.
Work it out.
I voted for board members. Why does the board get to pick their own members. Takis did not originally run to be a member. But the ERC friendly board put their person on the board.
What is the ERC (the mission, of course) and, more importantly, what do they do?
Here's the website address for the ERC blog. http://avgreenteam.wordpress.com/erc/
Wow. The ERC seem like druids...
Only their modern-day polytheism requires financial instead of human sacrifices.
I checked out the website and I think it is suspect. First off it kind of disrespects Ryan Walker by saying, "Cogratulations also for their reelection to Jan Kennemer, so-far our association’s secretary and Ryan Walker, who lost his seat last summer, because he missed more than 3 meetings." Obviously if he got elected why would it matter to say that he got kicked off for missing 3 meetings? At least he got voted on correctly by the whole of Arlington Village. Secondly, they need to check their grammar and spelling. It's really lackluster.
I checked it out too. I read until it recommended that we hang our laundry out to dry instead of using dryers, and put solar panels on our units!
I cut/pasted the following from the ERC website. Is this the guy who was appointed to the AV Board??
takis karantonis
The blowers are here again. A formation of 5 (!!) gas-powered bagpack-blowers and 1 big wheeled blower is combing through the village. Windy and cold-dry weather left, if at all, only a very thin and broken leaf-blanket around. What is blown away is basically the dry upper layer of mulch and dirt.
Further, in the group of six operators and a supervisor I haven’t seen a single one wearing hearing, breathing and/or eye protection. Our contractor seems to be negligent on work and safety standards for its employees. Can we tolerate this?
Whereas everyone is free to have an opinion of the ERC I would like to reiterate my opinion from my board notes: "I personally think Takis is a great addition to the Board. He really wants to better the Board and make things more transparent. I wish him luck."
I'm sure that many of you that have opinions will be at the next board meeting. It would be really nice to have some fresh faces and opinions there to express what is most important to you in the Village.
Is Claude Slagenhop still on the ERC committee?
So let me get this straight. An AV committee is recommending that we put solar panels on our units. BUT, at the same time, AV does not permit us to put out satellite dishes? Solar panels don't compromise the historical district status but satellite dishes do. Hmmm, me thinks that AV will lose if anyone every challenges the dish policy.
