Robbery on the Pike?

Has anyone heard about this? It was an armed robbery at the Bangkok 54 store a few days ago.

On a smaller scale...there was also a another type of robbery on Christmas Eve in the Village. A small Christmas tree was chopped down. I guess AV has a few of those trees sprinkled throughout the Village.

I can't believe somebody cut down a Christmas tree. It seems the Village has become a bunch of scrooges. I got my list of winners for the Christmas decoration contest and there was no group winner this year. Did you see the lights between 13th Road and 13th Street? I finally felt a sense of community but noticed that group did not win. I think my favorite part of the contest was that one of the prizes was pepper spray...wow that sends a message.

No, had not heard about an armed robbery. I did notice a car's back window had been smashed, not in the Village, just outside on the way to the bus stop on the Pike (near that junkyard empty lot...I feel sorry for the neighbors there).

The smashed rear window occurred on the day we had high winds. A large wheeled trash receptacle was carried by the wind and hit the car. I came by shortly after it happened. So this was not vandalism. I noticed our AV crew had tied our trash receptacles down.

RE: "the lights between 13th Rd. and 13th St."...which street? Edgewood? Cleveland? I didn't notice any particular group effort on either of those streets (acknowledging that Edgewood bet. 13th St./13th Rd. is not a part of AV. Which "group" sponsored the lights, and where were they, exactly?

Oh, and about one of the prizes being pepper spray--I *think* that's because AV's Safety & Security Committee sponsors the lights contest...but I could be wrong.

Bangkok 54 robbery info, from today's Arlington Crime Report's e-mail:

ROBBERY 12/31/09, 2900 block of Columbia Pike. On December 31 at 7:45 pm, an unknown Asian male entered a grocery store. The suspect brandished a weapon and held the storeowner’s child while he robbed the store. When he received money, he released the child and fled on foot. No one was harmed. The suspect was 5’5”, 145 lbs, and had a black knit ski mask pulled over his face.

I'm sorry to me blunt, but some of you think we live in some fantasy land. To the dope accusing an AV resident of the tree cutting, get real! Do you not realize where you live? More likely it was one of the vegabonds that lives on 16th or 17th Rd.

To those of you who think you live in a nice little 'safe' pocket of Arlington, wake up...sign yourself up to the Arlington Crime e-mail:

You people who move here from Wisconsin or other rural hamlets that think you can just walk around after 9pm without any caution are twits. Start becoming aware, and keep an eye on your surroundings. Our neighborhood is improving, but until most of the 'trash' is cleared on all streets touching Glebe south of Walter Reed, you need to keep yourself aware.

Vegabond=vegetarian vagabond???

Now wonder they stole a tree. Either they wanted to hug it or eat it!

I me from the rural hamlet of Wisconsin, too. To be, this is like a fantasy land. Only before nine p.m., though.

I heard they put the gun to a kid's head. So sad.

Gotta love when the 'come back' is about spelling...but I'm sure most of you gripers here are Vag-abonds anyway. All I'm saying is keep your head up and eyes open. 2 bikes were stolen near 16th St (wow, maybe that's why your not supposed to have them on your deck), and apparently a propane grill was attempted to be taken too, but the smart owner foiled the VAGAbonds with a simple lock and chain. I know of neighbors that had the backdoor kicked in in the middle of the night, yes Arlington Village.

Go ahead, keep your head down when you walk past people, don't say hi to your neighbors, keep your blinds open with that big flat-screen on the wall, don't look around walking around...then don't blame Arlington when something happens to you.
