Inaugural...taking it or leaving it???

OK...so are you "staying in" the day of the Inaugural? Or...are you getting out of town so you don't have to deal with an extra couple of million people.

I'm still mad they've shut off Virginia from DC...they've never shut down the bridges before so why start now. Seems much ado about nothing. Why couldn't you go down 50 or 66 to DC over Roosevelt Bridge and up 23rd Street or the E Street Exit???

Alas, can't wait to hear your plans. Let me know how long you think it is going to take to walk from Arlington Village to the Mall.

If you plan to head into DC for the festivities, get yourself some hand and foot warmers from Ski Chalet. I bought one of each for a total of a $7. These will be a lifesaver, I think!

Arlington County is running a special 16 Bus down Columbia Pike, with a drop off at C St SW. It will run every 10 minutes. I plan on using it--seems pretty easy!

I often walk to the Lincoln Memorial and back from AV. Briskly, when there's not a ton of traffic on the sidewalks, you can make it there in an hour. Allow extra time to wade through the crowds once you're there. That's assuming the sidewalk by the Pentagon is open for foot traffic. It won't surprise me if that is suddenly closed on Tuesday.

What route do you exactly take to get to the Lincoln Memorial?

I'm staying in my house like I was preparing for a snowstorm. Extra water and food and not coming out til the extra 4 Million people get out of the DC area.

I walk down the Pike to the Sheraton and turn left on Orme and walk to Henderson Hall and then right down that back street (Southgate Rd) by Arl Cemetery toward the Pentagon(or stay on the Pike to the intersection of Joyce Street and cross to the sidewalk there. Take the sidewalk under 27 and just on the other side of the access road, you will see a little on ramp to the sidewalk that goes by the Pentagon Mem'l. Stay on that sidewalk all the way to Meml Bridge.

NOTE: You are pretty close to traffic (if there is any) on Wash Blvd, so if that makes you uncomfortable, this isn't the route for you.

Thanks for the tips for the route. We are planning to head to the inaguration - going to a brunch in DC. Normally we would totally stay in an avoid the crowds, but we have family in town so....
Good idea about the hand and foot warmers!!!

Leaving it. Trying to get as far away form this debacle as possible. Love the hipocracy of it all though...Bush Inauguration in 2005: $40 million and the press were going nuts about how "over the top" it was. Obama's 2009 Inauguration: > $ 150 million and the same press are treating him like the second coming. Typical.

Well, it was fantastic (the event and the commute!) The commute from the Pike was very easy. The 16 bus that we had planned to take - directly to C street - didn't come (although we heard it did about 35 minutes prior to or arrival at the bus stop). However, we took the bus to the Pentagon station and then the bus (the 16 was there!) directly to L'Enfant. The return went just as easy.
