TWO Elections! Nationwide and Arlington Village

Hopefully everyone will vote tomorrow....however MARK your calendars for the candidate's night on Wednesday, November 5th!!!

That's right...it is NOT over. The next big race after tomorrow's Presidential will be for the Arlington Village Board of Director's on the 19th.

I have to admit I've never seen a flyer for someone running for the Board but I did get one the other day from 4 residents that are running as one ticket! Did anyone else get the flyer for Brandie Davis, Jodie Moxley, Craig Freer and Ryan Walker? I also saw it in my laundry room.

Sounds like our election for the AV Board might be warming up! Let us know if you want to give a shout out to who you want to see on the AV Board!

I think it is nice to see new faces stepping up for the Board. How many years has Jan been on the Board? Isn't it time for someone new? By the way, I saw that the swing was taken down near the tennis courts. Did Jan follow through with her plan to cut down the swing or did the owners do it voluntarily?

I saw that as well...I can only hope that she didn't force down a child's swing.

Extending the logic of risk of physical injury caused by a swing, we might extrapolate that logic to include removal of benches and chairs. (People might fall off them or accidentally sit on one of their upturned legs. “Doctor, could you remove this chair from my bum? The condo association left it out and I accidentally sat on it.”) Those flower boxes on second story windows are another matter as well. Think of happy homeowner inadvertently knocking it off the sill and it landing squarely on the mailman’s head. Talk about special delivery. Think about trees. Good god, not only could they fall on us, people might accidentally walk in to one, or god forbid a child climb up on one and tumble down. I’ve noted that some of our residents are leaving books and magazines out for others in our laundry rooms. What if some of that reading material contains off-color or other shocking passages. Can you imagine the lawsuit for mental anguish and distress? Needless to say, the association needs to do a lot more work before they’ll remove all threats to our safety and well being.

Hey WHAT HAPPENED

I saw a comment that a resident had received a flyer saying that four candidates were running as a block. I can't find it any more. Any more info on this.????

It's in the body of the blog, not in the comments. I'm wonder who makes up the block?

She's not listed in the "block of 4" but please consider voting for Carolyn McCornac. She's been a real asset to Arlington Village through several committee memberships and activities. I know that she was very active in the dog swim preparations. She's action-oriented and smart, and seems like she'd have the interests of all of AV in mind.

As a tribute to the owner of units 145, 533 and 535 Cupcake will attempt to write this posting completely in the third person.

While watching the election results last night Cupcake had the opportunity to review the candidates’ bios in the annual meeting package. The theme of “change” seems to be sweeping both the country and the little plot of land in Arlington County known as Arlington Village. How refreshing to read words like vision, forward thinking, grow, redevelop, breath new life into, and improving. Five of the six candidates articulated this call for change one way or another. All seem very dedicated and qualified. --However -- Cupcake did have issues with the one candidate that dwells in the past. After reading it, Cupcake thought that the only things Miss K didn’t do in the Village were to dig the clay, mold and fire the bricks, then lay them one on top of each other to construct our “solidly built, colonial style, brick town homes.” (Cupcake got that line from the AV website.)

As readers might have gleaned from some older other posts, Cupcake does feel that if the community is to remain an attractive place to live it MUST start thinking of the needs of residents living in 2008 and not 1981. Yes, the board can continue to maintain the Village just as they inherited from the developer in 1981 or it can recognize that homeowners of today have a different set of expectations when purchasing their homes. Cupcake is not advocating installing a fitness center on top of the pool house as was suggested several years ago, but serious consideration needs to be given to making sure the community maintains its “curb appeal.” Cupcake recalls that TV remodeling program that featured a unit in the Village. Wasn’t it titled “Tired little townhouse?” Cupcake doesn’t want 650 tired little townhouses in AV.

What to do? Cupcake plans on going to the meeting tonight and chatting with the prospective board members. Then Cupcake must vote.

If this really is a time for change, then owners need to get their act together. This is a tricky ballot. Keep in mind that as a rule only approx. 30% of owners actually cast ballots. With four openings and six candidates, the vote will be split more than usual. Miss K has quite the voting block, and with razor thin margins deciding who wins this is almost a lock for her. The only way Cupcake sees around this is if owners do two things: vote in accord and get non-voting neighbors to cast that ballot they’ve never cast before. If it is true what our dear blogger has written, and there is a movement under foot to get a solid voting block together then the first step has already been taken. The second step will be harder though. Might be time for some old-school pandering for votes. Cupcake is certain there will be some comments seen on this blog that will indicate how things are going in this regard.

Cupcake will be tying that broom to the stoop in hopes of a clean sweep come November 19th.

I am going to vote for anyone new to the Board. I don't believe Jan represents AV interests. I think she represents her own realtor interests.

I agree - business interests aren't appropriate for Arl Village board members in my opinion. I think she has a website that talks about being on the board. I'm sure its not considered unethical but it just doesn't seem right in my own opinion.

I am voting for the Davis, Moxley, Walker, Freer ticket. I think they are younger and seem to have many new ways to not only communicate with residents, but also improve our curb appeal and staff accountability.

Please do not comment on people and say disrespectful things on this blog. We are not children and therefore should not act like them. The fact that I had to delete a comment is ridiculous. Plus the person didn't have the decency to even leave their name.

I did what "cupcake" suggested and clicked on the name cupcake--and discovered that it is linked to the Facebook page of none other than Jan Kennemer! Is it possible that cupcake is, in fact, Ms. Kennemer? I mean, why else would anybody link their name to a particular Facebook page? What's up with that? And if "cupcake" is NOT Ms. Kennemer, is it okay with this blog's moderator for said "cupcake" to post such a link?
